What is Just Walk Across the Room?

The Just Walk experience originated from a series of five talks delivered during midweek services by Bill Hybels, the founding senior pastor of Willow Creek Community Church. When he realized just how powerfully the concept resonated with his congregation, he set about the task of broadening the application to churches nationwide. The result was Just Walk Across the Room: The Four-Week Church Campaign, an experience intended to put a blowtorch to the value of personal evangelism in your church.

Why four weeks?

You’ve heard the old saying about it taking 28 days to form a new habit. Well, we just happen to believe that it's true. One month: it’s long enough to cultivate a new paradigm — even about something as complex and critical as evangelism — but short enough to keep you engaged throughout the entire experience. We know your ministry calendar presents the constant dilemma of many good ideas but not enough time to execute them all. Without monopolizing too much of your preaching schedule, we believe devoting four weeks to the issue of personal evangelism among your congregation will single-handedly revolutionize your people’s minds, hearts, and habits pertaining to pointing people to faith. Four weeks...with potentially eternal impact.

When should my church implement this campaign?

Honest answer? Whenever you would like. This dynamic four-week campaign can be done anytime during the church year.

What’s involved in executing the campaign?

The four-week experience has something for everyone — entire congregations, small group participants, and individuals. From weekend service tools — using the CD-ROM that is contained only in the Just Walk Campaign Curriculum Kit — to a weekly Bible study for small groups and individual reflection, the Just Walk experience will aid your people in connecting visually, intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, and interpersonally with this approach to personal evangelism. Specifically, the Campaign Kit contains a step-by-step implementation plan for you to follow. After appointing a Campaign Team about 60 days prior to your launch date, you will be led through a variety of mission-critical activities, such as:
  • Obtaining buy-in from church leadership (60 days out)
  • Recruiting and orienting campaign team members (45 days out)
  • Coordinating a Congregational Day of Prayer & Fasting (30 days out)
  • Facilitating small groups’ success in working through the material (30 days out)
  • Creating and maintaining positive momentum (throughout four weeks of experience)
  • Celebrating success (immediately following the experience)

What will happen as a result of implementing this campaign?

It’s really true: Most Christ-followers not only know people in their spheres of influence who are living far from God, but they also desperately wish they could do something — anything — to point them toward faith. In other words, they have the “want to” of personal evangelism, but they believe they lack the “will do!” aspect.

Just Walk Across the Room: The Four-Week Experience provides a great framework for thinking about the work of personal evangelism. But it doesn’t stop there…it also gives your congregation the requisite confidence that pointing people to faith is something that they can do. As your church wraps their brains around paying more attention to the Holy Spirit than they pay to their fears, their insecurities, and their bad past experiences…they will see God use them in profound ways as he works to build his kingdom here on planet Earth.

Here’s how Bill Hybels reflects on a similar concept in Just Walk Across the Room:

You and I have been redeemed and restored for a similar purpose — a purpose more notable than spending eternity with God in heaven. You and I are expected and encouraged to share our salvation with others so that God’s ultimate agenda is served — that all people would come to know him as Father.

Encourage your congregation to take a walk, friends. They will never regret steps taken toward the people for whom Christ died…for whom the heart of God beats.
